2/19/10 DIY Maid Appreciation Day

DIY Maid Appreciation Day

Everyone likes a good pat on the back now and then. Show your maid that you care about her by throwing an informal Maid Appreciation Day. It will take only a little time and very little money, but it’ll show your house cleaner that you appreciate and value her services. Studies show that employees and service people who are properly appreciated perform better and have a greater sense of loyalty to their employers—so the appreciation is really an investment in your domestic cleaning services and the cleanliness of your home.

Since there isn’t an official Maid Appreciation Day already, decide on a date that you want to show gratitude. A good time of the year is during the dreary months of winter after Valentine’s Day when the next major holiday is a month or more away. Schedule your cleaning like normal, making sure that your usual maid will be present for the appointment. Make sure you are home when the housekeeping arrives so that you can surprise her with a showing of gratitude.

When she arrives, give your maid a bouquet of seasonal flowers and a card to show your appreciation. Make sure the flowers are freshly cut and that their stems are wrapped in moist paper towels to keep them from drying out while she attends to your home. You can also keep them in a vase until she finishes her work. The card can be a simple thank you note with your appreciation written out by hand. Thank her for all the work that she does, and tell her how much you appreciate her excellent attention to detail.

Other details are up to you. If you have a close relationship with your house cleaning service, you can give your maid a small present or gift certificate. For those who employ friends or family, consider treating your maid to lunch one day when she has off. If others will be present during the cleaning, you can request that they each thank the maid for the ways in which she betters their lives. The options are limitless, depending on your particular situation.

If you live in an apartment complex, condominium high rise or other association-based area that has a cleaning service handling the common areas, don’t forget to show your appreciation to these workers as well. Cards and small gifts (such as boxes of chocolates or gift cards to a local coffee shop) are great ways to build a positive relationship with these cleaning and maintenance people.

While you are ultimately paying for your maid service, it’s always important to remember that your cleaning company staff is human, too. Praise them and show gratitude to foster a strong relationship. If your maid enjoys working for you and knows that you value her work, she’ll almost certainly go out of her way to make sure your home is extra clean.  Though, if you hire an excellent residential cleaning service like Maid for Mommy, you’ll already be getting star treatment from day one!
