3/12/10 Spring Cleaning – Getting Rid of Dingy Smells

Back

With spring just around the corner, it’s a great time to get a jump on your spring cleaning! In this first installment of the spring cleaning series, we’ll share a few tips for removing dingy odors from your home and replacing them with fresh, clean scents.

Many odors are caused by bacteria that linger in moist, stagnant areas. When your home is all boarded up for the winter with little ventilation, it becomes a nesting ground for bacteria and the bad smells they carry. Start removing odors by opening your windows and doors to get cross ventilation. It may take a few days, but it’ll be well worth the time when your home is breezy and clean-smelling. Reverse your ceiling fans so the airflow is forced downwards and allow them to push stagnant air out the windows.

Next, set up a dehumidifier in your home. If you live in Central NJ, you know that no residential cleaning service could handle all of the snow and rain the region received this winter. A dehumidifier removes any traces of moisture in your home, helping to reduce bacteria if used properly. Follow the instructions on the unit to ensure it is functioning properly.

The next time you are at the grocery store, compare dryer sheets. Find a scent that you like and purchase a box. You won’t be using these on dirty laundry; instead, you’ll be fighting bad smells around your home and replacing them with clean aromas. Place an unused dryer sheet in each of your shoes under your bed or in your closet. This will give them a clean, fresh scent. You should also tuck dryer sheets around the house in inconspicuous areas. Great places include between the mattress and box spring of your bed, above cabinets and inside ventilated drawers. Avoid placing sheets near fabrics that can’t be stained as the fragrance and oil can leave residue.

Use an air freshener designed to eliminate odors, not just mask them. A spray freshener such as Febreze is an excellent way to refresh carpets, couches and cushions. Simply spritz a small amount of liquid in an unseen corner and let the fresh-smelling product get to work. Don’t spray delicate fabrics such as silk or chiffon which can be easily stained by such treatments.

Finally, give your carpets a good, thorough wet cleaning. Call your house cleaner and schedule an appointment soon. The fibers of your carpet trap a tremendous amount of dirt, residue and moisture that can be traipsed throughout the home, spreading bad odors with each step. Instruct your maid to use a good amount of shampoo to really remove any negative smells or materials.

Once you remove bad odors from your home, you’ll start feeling happier and motivated right away. It’s a great way to kick off spring cleaning!  Plus, if you tackle all of your cleaning while the weather is still brisk, you’ll be able to spend more time enjoying the outdoors in April and May!
